HORNETS DROP TWO ON DAY 1 OF HAMPTON TOURNEY

Hampton, Va. (Feb. 28, 2020) --- Host Hampton scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie in 6-4 win over Delaware State on day one of the Pirates' tournament today.
Earlier today in the tournament opener, the Hornets fell to Marshall 8-0.
In the Hampton contest, Brianna Anderson led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run off DSU's Briana Baker to give the Pirates a 5-4 lead. Two batters later, Lexi Lomax homered off Baker with the bases empty to add to Hampton's lead.
In the top of the seventh, Delaware State loaded the bases on two walks and a single, but Hampton reliever No'elle Doan retired Jaelyn Baker to end the game.
The Hornets trailed three times before the sixth inning, but battled back to tie the game each time.
DSU trailed 1-0 when Jordan Casey singled in Jasmine Melgoza with two outs in the third to even the score.
Hampton led 3-1 when the Hornets tied the game again with two runs in the fourth. Carissa Thorne and Jonah Cunnigan had run-scoring singles in the DSU fourth.
 The Hornets tied the game for a third time (4-4) on a sacrifice fly by Thorne in the top of the sixth.
Hampton outhit the Hornets 10-8. DSU was also plagued by three errors in the game.
Delaware State was held to just one hit in the Marshall contest, a one out single by Cunnigan in the top of the sixth.
The game was called after the Thundering Herd scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth due to the eight-run rule.
Marshall hit four home runs in the game, including two solo shots by Mya Stevenson.
The Hornets will face Fairleigh Dickinson (9:00 am) and Hampton again on Saturday (2:00 pm), and close out the Hampton tourney against Fairleigh Dickinson (10:00 am) in Norfolk, Va., on Sunday.
