Hampton, Va. (Feb. 29, 2020) ---
Brianna Baker tossed a complete game, while Caitlyn Meyer and Carissa Thorn drove in two runs each to lead Delaware State to a 4-2 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson for the Hornets' first victory of the season in day two of the Hampton University tournament.
Baker shutout the Knights in the last six innings after allowing two runs in the top of the first.
The Hornets tied the score at 2-2 when Thorne tripled in two runs with one out in the bottom of the second. The hit scored
Alaena Selden, who singled with one out, and
Jade King, who reached on an error.
DSU took the lead for god when Hannah Crumblish singled with one out Meyer followed with a home run over the fence in left field for the Hornets' first four-bagger of the season.
FDU put runners on base in each of the next four innings, but Baker was able to keep the Knights off the board. The Hornets ended the game by turning a shortstop-to-first base double play in the top of the seventh inning.
Thorne, Selden and Crumblish each had two hits to lead the Hornets. DSU was also error-free in the contest.
Delaware State fell to host Hampton 11-3 in its second game of the day.
The Pirates scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning to erase a 2-0 Delaware State lead. Hampton added a run in the third inning and three more in the fourth to open up a 10-2 lead.
The Hornets jumped out in front with two runs in the top of the second inning on King's first home run of the season and second of her career. Selden scored in front of King after reaching base on a fielder's choice.
Jaelyn Baker, who singled to start the inning, was out on the play.
Hampton outhit DSU 10-4 in the game.
Delaware State (1-14) will close out Hampton Tournament play with another contest against Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday (Mar. 1) in a game in Norfolk, Va. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
