Charleston, S.C. (Feb. 20, 2020) --- Alex Andronica was five-for-six with a home run and three runs batted in, and Christian Maggio was two-for-three with five RBI to lead Charleston Southern to a 13-1 victory over Delaware State in the opener of a four-game weekend series today.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Hornets, who fell to 2-5 this season. The Buccaneers ended a two-game slide to improve to 3-7.
Charleston Southern opened the scoring with three runs in the first off Hornet starter
Cole Bates (fr.). Andronica singled in the first run and Maggio had a two-run single in the inning.
The Bucs added two runs in the fourth, one on a single by Andronica, to open up a 5-0 lead.
Delaware State scored its lone run in the fifth when
Alex Vasquez walked with one out and scored on a two-out double by
Tommy Jordan.
Andronica led off the Charleston Southern sixth with a home run to give his team a five-run lead again. The Bucs added two more runs in the inning to build an 8-1 advantage.
Maggio singled in his third run of the game in the seventh and singled in two more in the eighth.
Jordan's double was the only extra base hit among the Hornets' four in the game.
Bates (0-3) allowed eight hits and five runs, while striking out one and walking five in four innings to take the loss. Â Â Â Â Â
The series continues with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m., and wrap up with a single game on Sunday starting at one. Â Â
