HORNETS TAKE NIGHTCAP FOR SPLIT WITH MINUTEMEN

Dover, Del. (Feb. 22, 2020) --- Tyler Cunningham (jr.) laced a single down the right field line to score pinch runner Arthur Burrell with one in the seventh inning to give Delaware State a 1-0 walk-off victory over Massachusetts in game two of a doubleheader at Soldier Field today.
UMass won the seven-inning opener 6-3.
In the nightcap, the game was scoreless when DSU's Trey Paige doubled with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Burrell was brought in to pinch run after Paige's first collegiate extra base hit.  Cunningham followed with his hit off UMass reliever Kevin Dow (0-1) to give the Hornets their first win of the season (1-4).
Game two was shaping up as a pitchers' duel between starters Corey Loper, Jr. (so.) of DSU and UMass' Ben Shields.
Loper threw 6.2 shutout innings in his second start of the season. He left the game after giving up a two-out walk in the top of the seventh inning. Loper was relieved by Chandler Fitzgerald (jr.), who recorded the final out of the inning on a fly ball to collect the win.
Loper allowed six hits, while striking out six and walking two. Shields gave up just two hits, while striking out seven and walking one to earn a no-decision.
The Hornets had just two hits entering the bottom of the seventh, singles by Cunningham in the third and Jared Gillis in the fourth.
In the opener, the score was 3-3 when UMass scored two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to win its season opener.
Jordan Erbe doubled in the go-ahead runs for the Minutemen in the fourth off DSU reliever Greg Dorfman (fr.).  Chris Pearsons drove in a run on a fielder's choice for UMass in the fifth.
The Minutemen opened the scoring with a run on two hits in the top of the first off Hornet starter Cole Bates (fr.).
Delaware State tied the score with a run in the bottom of the second. Gillis reached on an error to lead off the inning and later scored on a sac fly by Paige.
UMass answered with two runs in the top of the third to regain the lead 3-1, but the Hornets answered with two in the bottom of the inning to even the score again.
John Weglarz singled with two outs and Miguel Rivera followed with the Hornets' first home run of the season, a shot over the fence in left, to tie the game at 3-3.
Delaware State had just three hits in the game, none after the third inning.
Bates (0-2) took the loss for the Hornets, while UMass starter Sean Harney (1-0) was the winner.
The teams will close out the series with a single game on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Soldier Field.
