LATE SCORES KEY ELON PAST HORNETS

Elon, N.C. (Feb. 15, 2020) --- Elon scored four runs in its last three at bats to break a 2-2 tie en route to a 7-2 victory over Delaware State at Latham Park today. The Phoenix (2-0) have won the first two games in the scheduled three-game series.
The score was tied at two when Elon scored a run in the sixth to take the lead for good. Matt Oldham drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out infield single off Delaware State starter Cole Bates (fr.), who was making his first collegiate start. Joe Satterfield, who reached base on a DSU error to lead off the inning, scored from third on the hit.
The Phoenix tacked on a run in the seventh to open up a 4-2 lead and added three insurance runs in the eighth to close out the scoring.
Bates pitched 5.1 innings, allowing four hits and three runs, although only one was earned. He struck out two and walked three in his college debut.
Delaware State trailed 2-0 before scoring a run in the fifth. Catcher Robert Trujillo walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tommy Jordan. John Weglarz followed with a double, although Trujillo was only able to advance to third on the hit. The next batter, Miguel Rivera, grounded out to short, scoring Trujillo with the Hornets' first run.
DSU evened the score with a run in the sixth. Tyler Cunningham singled to lead off the inning and moved to second and third on two wild pitches. He scored the tying on sacrifice fly by Mark Herron.
Delaware State left nine runners on base, including three on in the second and fifth innings.
Freshman Michael Carrington had two of the Hornets' four hits (2-3).
Delaware State has combined for eight hits in the first two games
The teams will wrap up the series with a single game in Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Hornets will play their 2020 home opening series next weekend (Feb. 21-23) against Massachusetts.
