SECOND HALF SURGE KEYS CHANTICLEERS’ WIN OVER HORNETS

Box Score (Dec. 17, 2020) Conway, S.C. --- Coastal Carolina used a strong second half performance to key a 99-73 victory over Delaware State in a men's basketball contest  at the HTC Center this evening. The Hornets, playing for the first time since Nov. 26, only trailed 44-39 at the half, but were outscored 55-34 in the final 20 minutes to fall to 0-2 on the season. The Chanticleers won for the fifth time in six games this year.  
CCU's DeVante Jones led all players with 33 points. Jones was 10-for-14 from the field, including a three-pointer, and was successful on 12-of-13 at the free throw line.
Deanthony Tipler was second on the Chanticleers with 21 points, while Essam Mostafa recorded a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Hornets were outrebounded 50-25 in the contest.
Pinky Wiley was high man for Delaware State for the second straight game with 19 points, highlighted by six-for-six shooting from the free throw line.
Omari Peek-Green, playing in his first game this season, was second on the Hornets with 14 points off the bench. Peek-Green matched his career-high with four three-point field goals (4-6) in the game.
Freshman guard Martaz Robinson added 12 points, reaching double figures in each of his two collegiate contests.
Myles Carter , also making his season debut, came off the bench to tally 10 points for the Hornets.   
The Hornets outscored Coastal 33-15 in bench points.
There were six ties and seven lead changes in the first half.
Delaware State trailed 24-18 midway through the half before rallying to take the lead. Peek-Green capped off a 12-3 DSU run with a three-pointer to give the Hornets a 30-27 lead with 5:03 to go before halftime.
The score was tied for the sixth time in the half, 35-35, on another three by Peek-Green with 1:50 to go before the break.
Coastal Carolina outscored DSU 9-4 to close out the half.
The Hornets only trailed 45-41 before the Chanticleers scored 20 of the next 25 points to open up a 65-46 lead.
Delaware State could get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way, while Coastal held its biggest lead 99-68 in the last two minutes.  
The Hornets were 23-for-63 from the field for the game (36.5%), including 11-of-31 on three-point shots (35.5%). DSU was 16 for 18 at the free throw line (88.9%).
The Chanticleers knocked down 35 of their 65 shots (53.8%) from the floor, including 18 of 32 in the second half (56.3%). Coastal attempted  just 16 three-point shots, hitting six (37.5%).
STINGERS
Wiley and Robinson led the Hornets with four assists each … Wiley also surpassed the 900-point mark for his career in the game (916) … Carter led all players with a career-high three steals in the game … The Hornets return to action on Sunday (Dec. 20) at Georgia Tech (6:00 p.m.).
