Greensboro, N.C. (Jan. 27, 2020) --- Delaware State shot less than 35 percent from the field for the second straight game, falling to North Carolina A&T in a MEAC men's basketball contest this evening. The Hornets dropped their third straight game to fall to 2-17 overall and 1-4 in the MEAC, while the Aggies won their third in a row and seventh in the last eight contests to improve to 10-12 and 6-1.
Reserves Ronald Jackson and Fred Cleveland led a balanced North Carolina A&T attack with 16 points each. Jackson also led all players with 17 rebounds.
Omari Peek-Green led Delaware State with 21 points (9-17 FGs) and 12 rebounds, each a career-high. He also had a personal-best three three-point field goals.
As a team, the Hornets hit just 26 of their 75 shots from the floor (34.7%), including seven-of-32 on three-point attempts (21.9%). DSU also hit a season-low mark in free throw shooting for the game, connecting on just eight of 24 shots from the line (33.3%).
Pinky Wiley was the only other Delaware State player in double figures with 11 points.
John Crosby, the Hornets' leading scorer this season, was held to just eight points on three-of-17 shooting overall from the field and one-for-nine on three-point tries to drop his average to 20.8 points per game. Â
Delaware State was also outrebounded 61-44 in the game.
The game was close for much of the first half.
DSU only trailed 25-22 after a lay-in by
Ameer Bennett with 7:58 to go before halftime.
The Hornets were outscored 21-9 during the rest of the half, and trailed 46-31 at the break.
Wiley capped off a 5-0 Delaware State run with a lay-up to cut NCA&T's lead to 52-46, but the Aggies answered with a 13-2 run to regain control. Kameron Langley capped off the rally with an inside basket to give the hosts a 65-48 lead with 9:56 remaining in the game.
DSU could get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.
The Hornets begin a two-game homestand on Sat. (Feb. 1) against Coppin State. Game time is 2:00 p.m. in Memorial. The DSU/Coppin State women's contest will follow at 4:00 p.m.
