Dover, Del. (Jan. 13, 2019) ---Delaware State trailed by three points early in the second half but failed to get over the hump in a 98-77 MEAC men's basketball loss to North Carolina A&T in Memorial Hall Monday evening.
Andre Jackson led five NCA&T double-figure scorers with 20 points on 10-for-20 shooting from the field, including three three-point field goals.
Fred Cleveland and Andre Jackson added 13 points each for the Aggies, who won their sixth straight over the Hornets and fourth in a row this season to improve to 7-11 overall and 3-0 in the MEAC. Â
The loss overshadowed another solid performance by Hornet guard
John Crosby, who led all players with 28 points on eight-for-14 shooting from the field, including four three-point field goals (4-9) and eight free throws in 10 attempts.
Crosby topped the 20-point mark for the 10
th time in DSU's 17 games to raise his MEAC-best scoring mark to 22.1 points per game this season. Â He was ninth among all NCAA Div. I players in points-per- game entering the contest.
Myles Carter came off the bench to add 14 points, while
Omari Peek-Green contributed 10 points, also in a reserve role, for the Hornets.
Delaware State ran off eight straight points to open up a 22-18 lead, but the Aggies answered with an 11-0 run, and opened up a 29-22 lead on a three-pointer by Tyrone Lyons with 10 minutes to go in the first half.
The Hornets trailed by 10 points later in the half, but pulled to within 48-46 after
Omari Peek-Green hit a basket and knocked down three consecutive free throws with nine seconds to go before halftime.
Cleveland hit two free throws with 0.1 seconds left on the first half clock to give the Aggies a 50-46 lead at the break.
Delaware State trailed just 51-49 after a three-point play by Crosby early in the second half. The Aggies outscored the Hornets 12-4 over the next three minutes and opened up a 63-53 lead on an inside basket by Kameron Langley with 15:33 left to play.
NCA&T stretched its lead to 80-60 on a basket by Jackson with 6:35 left, and was ahead by as many as 25 points down the stretch.
Delaware State was outscored 48-31 in the second half.
NCA&T shot 53.1% in the second half (17-for-32) and 45.8% for the game (33-for-72).
The Hornets hit just nine of their 28 second half shots (32.1%) and only 24-of-59 for the game (40.7%).
Delaware lost for the eighth time in nine games to fall to 2-15 overall and 1-2 in the MEAC.
The Hornets are off until visiting North Carolina Central on Jan. 25. DSU will play North Carolina A&T again during the trip on Jan. 27 in Greensboro, N.C. Â Â
