Spartanburg, S.C. (Sep. 2, 2018) --- Delaware State only trailed by a goal after 80 minutes was allowed two late scores in a 4-1 loss to South Carolina Upstate this afternoon.
Jada Kinlaw scored two goals for Upstate, which has won three of its last four matches to improve to 4-2-0 this season.
Jade Jamison scored the lone goal for the Hornets. DSU has split its last two contests to stand at 1-5-0.
Kinlaw scored the first goal of the match to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute.
Delaware State goal keeper Leslie Fazio recorded seven first period saves to keep the Hornets in the match.
The Spartans opened up a 2-0 advantage on a goal by Abbie Ellis early in the second period (48th minute).
The Hornets cut the deficit in half on Jamison's goal in the 58th minute. The score was set up by a block of a shot by DSU' Alexa Gibbs. Jamison fired the rebound past Upstate goal keeper Samantha Munyon for her team-leading second goal of the season.
Delaware State had two shot attempts after pulling to within one, but came up empty.
The Spartans added some insurance on Kinlaw's second goal of the match in the 81st minute. Less than a minute later, Upstate's Isabella Burns closed out the scoring with her third goal of the season.
Delaware State was outshot 24-8, including 13-5 on goal.
Fazio was credited with a season-high nine saves in the contest.
The Hornet return to action on Wednesday vs. St. Peter's. The match is set for 7 p.m. at DE Turf on Route 113 in Frederica, Del.
