Orangeburg, S.C. --- Sophomore guard Lorna Caesar hit a follow-up basket with 0.5 seconds left to give Delaware State its first MEAC win of the season, 72-70, over South Carolina State today.
The Bulldogs tied the game at 70 on a lay-up by Jahmia Bradley with 10 seconds left. There were six ties and four lead changes in the second half.
After a Delaware State timeout, Alycea Sharpe missed a jumper, but DSU's NaJai Pollard grabbed the rebound and found Casear open under the basket for the game-winning shot.
The win snapped a 13-game losing streak for the Lady Hornets, who won for the first time since a 61-49 victory over Wagner on Nov. 20.
Delaware State led 19-9 after the first quarter and was ahead by as many as 11 in the second.
SC State rallied in the third and fourth quarters and led by as many as five in the final frame. DSU clawed back, and tied the game at 66 on a three-pointer by Mikah Aldridge with 2:08 remaining.
South Carolina State regained the lead on a Brittany Drumgoogle layup with 1:42 left to play.
Caesar hit a jumper to tie the game at 68, with 1:24 remaining. She finished with a career high 11 points and five assists.
On the ensuing possession, South Carolina State had three attempts at the basket, but were unable to convert.
After a DSU timeout, Pollard made a layup to give the Hornets a 70-68 lead 34 seconds left in the game.
SC-State's Brittany Drumgoogle found Jahmia Bradley open underneath the basket for a layup, tying the game at 70 with 9.8 seconds remaining.
Pollard recorded her 11th double-double of the season with game highs of 28 points and 12 rebounds. Mikah Aldridge was second on the Lady Hornets with 16 points, 13 of which came in the second half.
South Carolina State's Bryeasha Blair and Brittany Drumgoole scored 21 points each. Jahmia Bradley chipped in with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
The Lady Hornets connected on 27-of-67 field goal attempts (40.3%), but just 3-for -22 from three-point range (13.6%).
The Bulldogs were 24-for-66 from the field (36.4%), including 7-of-14 from beyond the arc (50.0%).
DSU improved to 2-16 overall and 1-4 in the MEAC, while SC State dropped its 10th straight to fall to 3-12 and 0-4.
Delaware State will wrap up its two-game road trip with a visit to Savannah State on Monday (Jan. 23). Game time is 6 p.m. in Savannah, Ga.
The Lady Hornets return home next Saturday (Jan. 28) to face Florida A&M to start a three-game homestand. Tip-off is 2 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
