Dover, Del. (Mar. 3, 2016) --- Christian Kessee scored a game-high 22 points and Terry Harris had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Coppin State to a 72-62 win over Delaware State in a regular season finale battle to avoid the lowest seed in next week's MEAC Tournament.
The Eagles snapped a two-game slide to finish the regular season at 8-21 overall and 6-10 in the MEAC. The Hornets dropped their fourth in a row to close out their regular schedule at 7-24 and 5-11.
Freshman guard Devin Morgan led three Delaware State players in double figures with 17 points, highlighted by four three-point field goals. DeAndre Haywood added 13 points and Jason Owens scored a career-high 10 points in the final home game of his career.
Coppin State never trailed in the contest. The Eagles scored the first six points of the game, and opened up an 18-9 lead on a three-pointer by Josh Treadwell with 12:34 left in the first half.
Delaware State pulled to within four points on four occasions over the next eight minutes, the last time on a three-point shot by Artem Tavakalyan to trim the Eagles' lead to 31-27 with 4:12 to go before halftime.
Coppin State answered with an 8-0 run, and stretched its lead to 39-27 on a follow-up basket by Harris at the 2:33 mark of the first half.
The Eagles held a 45-32 lead at the break.
After Delaware State scored the first points of the second half on a basket by DeVaughn Mallory, Coppin State responded with a 10-0 run to open up its biggest lead.
Harris capped off the rally with two free throws to give the Eagles a 55-34 lead with 14:04 left to play.
The final deficit of 10 points was the closest Delaware State would get the rest of the way.
Treadwell also recorded a double-double for Coppin State, scoring 10 points and pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds.
Delaware State actually outshot the Eagles in the contest. The Hornets were 24-for-55 overall from the field (43.6%), including eight-of-20 from three-point territory (40%).
The Eagles shot 40.7% for the game (22-for-54) and 36% on three-point attempts (nine-for-25).
Free throws were a big factor in the game. Coppin State was 19-for-25 at the line (86.4%), while the Hornets were just six-of-15 at the stripe (40%). Harris hit 12 of 13 free throw attempts for the Eagles.
Delaware State will return to action on Monday as the projected No. 12 seed in the 2016 MEAC Tournament in Norfolk, Va. The official pairings are expected to be announced by the league on Friday, although a blank bracket posted on the MEACHoops.com website has the No. 12 seed facing the fifth seed in an opening round contest on Monday Mar. 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Norfolk Scope Arena.
