MBB: HORNETS HOLD OFF EAGLES FOR FIRST ROAD WIN OF THE SEASON

Baltimore, Md. (Feb. 15, 2016) --- Delaware State received 51 points from its bench to key a 71-67 victory over Coppin State in a MEAC contest at the CSU Physical Education Complex this evening. The Hornets won their second straight, and first on the road this season, to improve to 6-20 overall and 4-7 in the MEAC.  The Eagles fell to 6-18 and 4-8.

Aric Dickerson and DeAndre Haywood came off  the bench to lead DSU with 13 points each. Dickerson was five-for-seven from the field, including three-of-four on three-point shots.

Devin Morgan led the Hornet starters with 10 points, while reserves Kavon Waller and Joseph Lewis added eight points each, and Todd Hughes chipped in with seven off the bench.

The Hornets got off to a quick start in the contest. After the Eagles began the scoring with a three-point shot, DSU ran off the next 11 points, and opened up an 11-3 lead on a three-ball by Dana Raysor just four-minutes-23 seconds into the game.

Delaware State was six-for-nine on three-point shots in the first half to highlight a 36-31 advantage at the break.

The teams traded baskets throughout the early part of the second half.

The Hornets stretched their lead to 54-46 on Dickerson's third three-pointer of the game with 13:42 left to play.

Coppin State answered with a 7-0 run, and cut DSU's lead to 54-53 on a three-pointer by Christian Kessee at the 11:33 mark of the second half.

Delaware State led 60-58 when Jason Owens hit a baseline jumper off a feed from Haywood with 5:05 remaining.

The Eagles failed to score on their next three possessions, and the Hornets took advantage when Lewis converted an old fashioned three-point play after a follow-up basket to give DSU a 65-58 lead with 2:36 left.

The Hornets missed six of 10 free throws in the final 42 seconds to give Coppin State a chance, but DSU forced the Eagles into five turnovers down the stretch to preserve its lead.

Delaware State was 28-for-57 from the field (49.1%), including eight-of-16 on three-point shots (50%).

Coppin State shot 39.6% for the game (21-for-53) and 23.8% from beyond the arc (five-for-21).

The Eagles won the rebound battle 42-28, but the Hornets had fewer turnovers. DSU turned the ball over 15 times, while Coppin State had 20 miscues.

The Hornets return to action on Saturday (Feb. 20) to begin a two-game homestand against Norfolk State. Game time is 4 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
