Dover, Del. (Feb. 13, 2016) --- Delaware State outscored UMES 48-35 in the second half en route to a 75-71 victory over the Hawks in a MEAC contest before an enthusiastic sell-out crowd in Memorial Hall today.
DeAndre Haywood scored a season-high 24 points, including 17 in the second half, and Devin Morgan added 16 to lead the Hornets, who trailed 36-27 at the half. Haywood hit eight of his 13 shots, including two-of-two on three-pointers.
DSU's Kavon Waller came off the bench to tally 15 points on four-of-four shooting from the field, including two three-pointers. Waller is nine-for-14 from the field, including six-of-seven on three-point shots, in the last two games.
Dominique Elliott led three UMES players in double-figures with 15 points. He also had a game-high 13 rebounds. Ryan Andino scored 12 points on four three-point field goals, and Bakari Copeland added 11 for the Hawks.
Delaware State trailed 48-40 midway through the second half before rallying to take the lead. The Hornets outscored the Hawks 15-3 over the next four minutes, capped off by back-to-back three-pointers by Morgan to open up a 55-51 lead with 7:03 left to play.
The Hornets led 57-56 when Waller nailed his second three-pointer of the game to stretch the lead to four. Haywood's three-point shot gave DSU a 66-61 lead with 2:23 remaining.
The Hornets led 67-65 when Dana Raysor was fouled on a lay-up off a feed from Haywood at the 1:09 mark of the second half. Raysor's free throw put DSU ahead  70-65.
UMES pulled to within 70-69 on two free throws by Copeland with 36 seconds remaining. Waller hit two free throws on Delaware State's next possession to give the Hornets a three-point lead.
After a follow-up basket by Elliot cut DSU's lead to 72-71, Haywood scored on a break-away dunk off an inbounds pass to give the Hornets a three-point advantage with 19 seconds left. Â Â Â
UMES missed two shots on its next possession, and Haywood hit a free throw with 3.5 seconds remaining to seal the victory for the Hornets.
Delaware State was 16-for-25 from the field in the second half (64%), including five-of-six on three-points shots (83.3%).
UMES was 12-for-28 from the floor in the second half (42.9%) after going 15-of-28 from the field (53.6%) in the opening 20 minutes. Â Â
The Hornets snapped a two-game skid to improve to 5-20 overall and 3-7 in the MEAC. UMES lost its second straight game to fall to 8-18 and 5-6.
DSU returns to action on Monday at Coppin State. Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Baltimore, Md.
