VB: HAWKS TOO MUCH FOR HORNETS IN MEAC CONTEST

Princess Anne, Md. (Oct. 14, 2016) --- The Delaware State volleyball team put up a tough fight in the second set but came up short in a 3-0 loss to Maryland-Eastern Shore in a MEAC match at the Hytche Center this evening.

The scores were 25-8, 28-26 and 25-14.

Rachel Kayongo led all players with 16 kills, while teammate Lucia Babic had eight for UMES. Ivana Blazevic had a double-double for the Hawks, collecting 32 assists and 11 digs.

Sabina Szmajduch topped the Hornets with eight kills, while Kalena Wiggins added six. Morgan Tennent had a team-high 20 assists and Aaliyah McBean tallied 13 digs for DSU.

UMES (12-10; 5-1 MEAC) led for much of the second set, but the Hornets fought back to force extra play. Kayongo capped off a 4-0 UMES run with a kill to give the Hawks a 20-14 set two lead.

The Hornets (0-20; 0-6 MEAC) were a point away from dropping the second set, trailing 24-20, before a staging a furious comeback. Wiggins posted a kill and UMES committed errors on the next two points to pull DSU to within 24-23. Danyelle Tucker had a kill off a feed from Tennant on the next point to tie the set at 24 and complete the comeback for the Hornets.

A kill by Jae Jackson on the next play put DSU ahead 25-24 lead and a point away from victory in the set.

After UMES tied the set at 25, the Hornets regained the lead, 26-25, on a service error by the Hawks.

The Hornets committed errors on the next three points to hand UMES the set win.

UMES had 39 kills and nine errors on 87 attacks for a .345 hitting percentage for the match. Delaware State posted a .034 attack percentage, tallying 23 points and 20 errors on 88 attacks.

The Hornets return home for their next match against Norfolk State on Sunday (Oct. 16). The MEAC contest is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
