(Dover, Del.) – Monday evening, the Delaware State women's basketball team (5-19, 2-9 MEAC) trailed only by one at the break, behind a staggering 56 percent (14-of-25) shooting, but the visiting Coppin State Eagles (5-18, 4-8 MEAC) reversed the trend in the second stanza to outscore the Lady Hornets 41-24 on a 19-for-34 (.559) output from the floor to come out on top with a 80-62 victory.
With this loss, DSU dropped its third in a row, whereas CSU tallied its second consecutive win after dropping its previous six.
In the first half, the Eagles were just 17-of-43 (.395) from the field, but managed take a 39-38 lead into the locker room totaling 22 boards, including 14 on the offensive end resulting in 13 second-chance points. DSU's Tierra Hawkins, meanwhile, registered 14 points (5-of-6) to lead all scorers at intermission.
After the break, the two squads were knotted for the 12th time of the night, this time at 51 with CSU's Bria Harris splitting a pair at the charity stripe with 12:31 left. Unfortunately for Delaware State, it would be as close as it would get the rest of the way, as the Eagles went on to score 13 out of the next 14 points to take a 64-52 lead with 9:06 to play.
As the half progressed, Coppin State carried over its physical play totaling 24 rebounds, in addition to 28 points in the paint when the final buzzer sounded. For the Hornets, they were limited to 33 percent (9-of-27) shooting in the final 20 minutes, whereas Hawkins hit a free throw for her only point of the second half to finish with a team-high 15 points (5-of-7).
CSU's Genesis Lucas, on the other hand, led the way for four Eagle players scoring in double figures with a game-high 22 points (10-of-17), while guard Jordan Swails and Harris finished with double-doubles combining for 34 points (14-of-32) and 22 rebounds.
Coming up, Delaware State will look to bounce back on the road against Hampton this Saturday (2 p.m.).
