HORNETS DROP HOME OPENER TO COPPIN STATE IN MEAC CONTEST

Dover, Del. (Oct. 9, 2015) --- The Delaware State volleyball team was home for the first time this season, but Coppin State played spoiler in a 3-0 victory over the Hornets in Memorial Hall Friday evening.

The scores were 25-9, 25-18 and 25-16.

Bailee Jackson had a match-high 11 kills, while teammates Cindy Okpegbue and Samantha Polk added 10 each, while setter Chelsee Sauni dished out 29 assists to lead the Eagles.

Jasmine Jackson came off the bench to lead the Hornets with 10 kills. DSU's Ayanna Lee tied for match-high honors with six digs.

In the first set, Coppin State scored the first five points and never looked back.

Delaware State fell behind 18-12 in the second set before six scoring of the next eight points to pull close. Jackson capped off the rally with a kill off a feed from Marisol Arredondo to cut Coppin State's lead to 20-18. The Eagles scored the last five points to claim the set.

The Hornets got off to a good start in set three, scoring four consecutive points to grab an early two-point lead. DSU opened up a 6-4 lead on a block by Nevershi Ellis.

The score was 8-8 when Coppin State regained the lead for good. The Hornets only trailed 17-15, but the Eagles scored eight of the last nine points to seal the set and match.

Coppin State improved to 6-9 overall and 3-1 in the MEAC, while the Hornets fell to 2-14 and 0-2.

Delaware State returns to action on Sunday at Morgan State. The match starts at 3 p.m. in Baltimore, Md. DSU's next home match is Oct. 25 against Howard (1:00 p.m.).
