Newark, Del. (Sep. 2, 2014) --- The Delaware State University volleyball team got off to slow start and never recovered in a 3-0 loss to Delaware at the Bob Carpenter Center this evening. The scores were 25-8, 25-15 and 25-16.
The Hens scored the first six points of the opening game, and used a 7-0 run to build an 18-4 advantage.
In the second set, Delaware State trailed 13-5 before attempting a comeback. The Hornets scored seven of the next nine points, and pulled to within 15-12 on a UD error. Jasmine Jackson had three consecutive kills during the DSU run.
The Hornets trailed 16-13 before Delaware pulled away. The Hens scored the next six points to stretch their lead to 22-13.
In the third game, Delaware State pulled to within 12-9 on blocks by Ariana Stevens and Jada' Canteen. After falling behind by seven points later in the set, the Hornets cut the UD lead to four, but could get no closer.
Delaware posted a .346 hitting percentage in the contest (35 kills/9 errors/75 attacks), compared to .060 for the Hornets (24/20/67).
DSU had more digs 25-20. Natalia Mendieta led the Hornets with six digs, while Alliyah and Jasmine Jackson collected five each.
Jackson also topped the Hornets with nine kills on 20 attacks (.150). Taylor Marshall had a team-high 11 assists for DSU.
Delaware's Chandler Bryant led all players with 12 kills on 17 attempts (.647 TA). UD's Erin Layne had a match-high 16 assists.
The Hornets (0-4) will return to action on Sep. 12 at the Lehigh/Lafayette Tournament in Pennsylvania.
