(Fairfield, Conn.) – Friday evening, the Delaware State women's soccer team (0-1) came up short in its season opener on the road to the Sacred Heart Pioneers (1-0), 4-2.  

In the first period, the Pioneers managed to take a 1-0 lead during the seventh minute, when midfielder Kristin Verrette (1) placed a corner kick just past the reach of DSU's Katelyn Koslosky for the score.

However, the Hornets battled back to tie the game during the 29th minute by way of forward Chelsea Boursiquot, a native of Stratford, Conn., finding midfielder Franny Farella (1) about 12 yards away from the net.

Verrette, meanwhile, continued to spearhead Sacred Heart's offensive attack by connecting for two more goals, giving her squad a 3-1 lead at the break.  During 32nd minute, forward Alexis Parlato fed Verrette for her second goal, whereas forward Monica Re found Verrette shortly before intermission.

Heading into the season, Verrette returned as the squad's top scorer with five goals and four assists for 14 points in 2013.  

Throughout the majority second stanza, the Hornets managed to keep the deficit at two, until Sacred Heart's Maggie Falja (1) scored to give her squad a commanding 4-1 lead during the 72nd minute.  Defender Chanlder Antczak was credited with the assist.    

The Hornets, on the other hand, tacked on a late goal with just over three minutes to play with forward Taylor Addison feeding Boursiquot (1) for the score.

At game's end, the Pioneers tallied 23 shots, compared to DSU's seven, as Verrette totaled a game-high 10 attempts with four placed on-frame.

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will look to bounce back on Sunday (2 p.m.) at Stony Brook.
