Dover, Del. (Feb. 22, 2014) ---Casey Walker scored a game-high 26 points to lead Delaware State to an 84-71 win over UMES in a MEAC men's basketball contest in Memorial Hall today.
The Hornets have won four of their last five games to improve to 8-18 overall and 4-9 in the MEAC. The Hawks fell to 4-21 and 2-10.
Walker tied his career-high with six three-point field goals (6-for-9) and was eigth-for-13 overall from the field. It marked the fourth time that he's hit six three-pointers in a game.
Walker is second on the Hornets' all-time list with 256 three-point field goals. He leads the team with 49 threes this season.
Tyshawn Bell added 16 points (5-9 FGs; 2-3 3pt.; 4-4 FTs),); while Kendall Gray tallied 15 (6-8 FGs) points and 10 rebounds to post his ninth double-double of the season.
Kendal Williams was the fourth DSU player in double figures with 10 points. He scored the first six points of the game on two three-point field goals.
Troy Snyder was high scorer for UMES with 20 points (8-13 FGs), KyRee Jones added 16 points. His performance was highlighted by four three-point field goals.
Delaware State trailed 25-24 in the first half before regaining the lead.
Walker capped off an 8-0 run with a three-pointer to give the Hornets a 32-25 lead with 4:43 to go before halftime.
UMES scored 11 of the next 15 points, and tied the game at 36-36 on a three-ball by Jones with five seconds left in the half.
On the ensuing possession, Delaware State rushed the ball up court and Walker nailed a long three-pointer at the first half buzzer to five the Hornets a 39-36 lead at the break.
Delaware State held a 45-44 lead before taking control in the second half. Jason Owens closed out a 17-2 DSU run with a lay-up to give the Hornets a 62-46 lead with 8:38 left to play. Walker had eight points, highlighted by two three-point field goals, during the spurt.
Walker's final three-pointer of the game gave the Hornets a 70-55 lead with 4:27 left to go.
Delaware State shot 66.7% from the field in the second half (16-for-24).
For the game, the Hornets were 30-for-52 from the floor (57.7%), including 10-of-17 from three-point territory (58.8%). DSU was also successful on 14-of-18 attempts from the free throw line (77.8%).
UMES was 24-for-57 overall from the field (42.1%) and seven-of-20 from beyond the arc (35.0%).
Delaware State won the rebound battle 33 to 26.
The Hornets continue their final homestand of the season against Morgan State on Monday. Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
