Baltimore, Md. (Oct. 31, 2014) --- The Delaware State University volleyball team stayed alive with a third set win, but could not complete the comeback in a 3-1 loss to Coppin State this evening.
The Eagles won the first two sets by identical 25-21 scores. The Hornets won the third set 26-24 before Coppin State clinched the match with a 25-16 victory in the final set.
Jasmine Jackson (jr.) and Nevershi Ellis (fr.) led the Hornets with 12 kills each. Jackson had 28 attempts in the contest for a .321 hitting percentage in the match.
Ayanna Lee (fr.) had a team-high 12 digs, while Natalia Mendieta (jr.) and Taylor Marshall (so.) topped the team with 18 assists each.
Coppin State's Cindy Okpegbue led all players with 22 kills on 41 attempts (.341). Chelsee Sauni posted 53 assists for the Eagles.
DSU's Ariana Stevens led all players with four blocks in the match (one solo).
Coppin State had a .298 hitting percentage in the contest. The Eagles tallied 59 kills and 20 errors on 131 attacks.
Delaware State recorded 44 kills and 16 errors on 118 attempts for a .237 attack percentage. The Hornets had 17 winners on 29 attacks in third set win (.483). Â Â Â Â
Coppin State improved 12-11 overall and 6-4 in the MEAC, while the Hornets fell to 1-22 and 1-7.  Â
The Hornets return to action on Sunday (Nov. 2) at Morgan State. The MEAC contest begins at 3 p.m. in Baltimore, Md. Â
