FEISTY HORNETS FALL SHORT TO NJIT ON THE ROAD FRIDAY NIGHT, 2-1

(Newark, N.J.) – In a match that saw a combined 29 fouls, in addition to five yellow cards, the Delaware State women's soccer team (3-9-1) came up short on the road Friday night in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the NJIT Highlanders (3-11).

For the game, the Hornets committed 14 fouls, with one resulting in a penalty kick opportunity for NJIT's Jenny Cislo (1) early in the first period. Unfortunately for DSU, Cislo's attempt got past goalkeeper Katelyn Koslosky for the first goal of the night.

At the half, the Hornets managed eight shot attempts to NJIT's four, but DSU still trailed by one going into the locker room.

After intermission, the Highlanders took a 2-0 lead during the 54th minute, when Madeline Griep sent a crossing pass from the right side in DSU territory, resulting in Kaelyn Gamel team-leading third score of the season.

However, the Hornets answered a little over four minutes with forward Paige Wilcox finding fellow running mate Emma Cain (2) to cut the deficit to one.

As the game wore on, things became a bit testy with all five yellow cards being issued, including four charged to the Hornets.  Nevertheless, DSU could not breakthrough as the Highlanders held on for the victory, snapping a six-game losing skid.

When the final buzzer sounded, the Hornets tallied 12 shots, including seven placed on-frame, whereas NJIT finished with four total attempts.  In the net, NJIT's Samantha Bersett collected five saves in 68 minutes of play to pick up the win before being replaced by Karen David, while Koslosky managed just one stop.

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will have a long layoff before returning to action on Oct. 22 (7 p.m.) at home against Temple.
