Phila., Pa. (Sep. 21, 2013) --- The Delaware State University volleyball team fell to Brown (1-3) and Hofstra (0-3) on Saturday to go winless in three matches at the Temple University Tournament this weekend.
The Hornets were upended by Brown 24-26, 27-25, 20-25 and 22-25.
In game one, DSU scored the first five points and opened up a 9-1 lead on a kill by Carey Berry.
The Hornets held their biggest lead of the game, 12-2, on a kill by Jessica Russell-Croucher off an assist by Natalia Mendieta.
Brown responded with a 12-2 run and tied the game at 14-14 on a winner by Amanda Nickel.
The game one score was tied at 15, 22, 23 and 24 before Brown scored the last two points to for the win.
In game two, Delaware State again jumped out to an early lead. The Hornets scored the first seven points of the game and opened up a 13-5 lead on an error by the Bears.
DSU led 19-11 before Brown started a comeback. The Bears scored 13 of the next 18 points to tie the game at 24-24.
The Hornets were on the verge of losing the game when the Bears scored the next point to lead 25-24.
Delaware State scored the next three points, capped off by a Kelsey Ellis ace to take the game and tie the match at 1-1.
The Hornets led 17-11 in the third game before faltering. Brown outscored DSU 14-3 down the stretch to win the game and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Game four featured six ties before Brown pulled away late
Jasmine Jackson led the Hornets with 19 kills and added 10 digs. Russell-Croucher contributed 15 kills and 10 digs. She was named to the Temple University All-Tournament Team.
Four DSU players had 10-or-more digs, led by Natalia Mendieta's 14. Mendieta also had a career-high 36 assists in the match.
Delaware State fell to Hofstra 25-9, 25-21 and 30-28.
DSU had a -.025 hitting percentage in the match (21 kills/23 errors/80 attempts).
The Hornets (1-8) return to action on Monday at home against Niagara. The match begins at 5:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
