TEMPLE TOO MUCH FOR HORNETS IN TOURNEY OPENER

Phila., Pa. (Sep. 20, 2013) --- The Delaware State University volleyball team was overmatched by a strong Temple squad 3-0 in the opening round of the TU Tournament at McGonigle Hall this evening. The scores were 25-11, 25-16 and 25-21. The Owls won for the eighth time in nine matches to improve to 8-2 this season. The Hornets fell to 1-7.

Caroline Gratton was Temple's top performer with 10 kills and 13 digs. Gabriella Matautia added 11 kills, while Sandra Sydlik had a team-high 25 assists for the Owls.

Jessica Croucher led Delaware State with seven kills, while Jasmine Jackson added six. Sonya Inderbitzen had 12 digs to lead the Hornets, while Natalia Mendieta had a team-high 16 assists.

Delaware State had an attack percentage of -.029 in the contest (19 kills.22 errors/105 attacks), compared to .260 for the Owls (44/17/104).

The Hornets held an edge in blocks (16-15) and service aces (6-4) in the contest. DSU freshman Jae Jackson led all players with six blocks.

The Hornets will take on Brown (10:00 a.m.) and Hofstra (4:00 p.m.) on day two of the Temple Tournament on Saturday.
