Dover, Del. (Feb. 18, 2013) --- Bianca Jarrett scored 32 points, including eight in overtime, to lead Morgan State to 69-67 win over Delaware State in Memorial Hall this evening.
The Lady Hornets dropped their fifth straight game to fall to 8-16 overall and 5-6 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
Tierra Hawkins scored a career high 30 points to lead DSU. Hawkins was 12-for-17 from the field and 6-of-9 at the free throw line. It was the first 30-point game for a Lady Hornet player since Terrelle Waller scored 30 against Coppin State on Jan. 10, 2004.
Deanna Harmon added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds for DSU.
Delaware State led by as many as 11 in the first half, and was ahead 27-18 at the break.
The Lady Hornets opened up their biggest lead of the game, 34-20, on a jumper by Hawkins with 16:29 left in the second half.
Delaware State was ahead 45-34 when the Bears stormed back. Jarrett capped off a 13-2 Morgan State run with a three-pointer to tie the game at 47-47 with 5:52 left in regulation. The Bears took the lead, 49-47, on a lay up by Jarrett on their next possession.
Delaware State bounced back, and regained the lead 56-53 on a three-pointer by Tasia Bristow with 2:55 left in the second half.
Jarrett answered with a three-point shot on Morgan State's next possession to tie the game at 56-56.
Neither team could score in the final 2:47 of regulation.
In the extra period, Delaware State opened up a 65-62 lead on a lay up by Hawkins off a feed from Harmon with 2:26 remaining.
The Bears responded by scoring the next seven points to take the lead for good. Morgan's Jamesia Smith tied the game with a three-pointer and Jarrett hit four straight free throws to give the Bears a 69-65 lead in the final 30 seconds.
Delaware State will return to action on Saturday at home against Norfolk State. Game time is 2:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
