DOVER, Del. - Sophomore Kaitlyn Schech (Abingdon, Md.) and
freshman Chelsea Boursiquot
(Stratford, Conn.) each scored goals as the Delaware State University women's
soccer team defeated Chestnut Hill, 2-1, as they opened their spring season
this past Sunday at Alumni Stadium.
The
Hornets managed to take twice as many shots as the Griffins and just missed
four more goals with shots hitting the crossbar and post.
"This
was a very physical contest from the kick off," commented DSU head coach Nitan
Soni. "As a whole, the team worked
extremely hard throughout the game. We
had just one sub on the bench and our girls showed fight until the end."
Junior
Candace Wyre (Smyrna, Del.) assisted
Schech on her goal while Boursiquot drove in an unassisted shot.
The
Hornets saw action from freshman walk-on Kaitlyn
Corder for the first time in a DSU uniform and put forth a strong showing.
"Kaitlyn
was a bit nervous before the game, but when the time came, she kept the game
simple and found several opportunities to step up," Soni stated. "She made several smart defensive plays to
stop their forwards from getting a shot on goal."
Soni
continued, "We definitely found some areas to improve on, but the match was a
successful win. The ladies have shown
growth in the work that we've been able to put in so far this spring and I know
they will continue to progress."
The
Hornets travel to Philadelphia, Pa. this coming Saturday for a 'Play Day' vs.
Philadelphia University and Temple University.
Play begins at 10 a.m. on the Temple campus.
