SECOND HALF SURGE KEYS SFC WIN OVER LADY HORNETS

Brooklyn Hts., N.Y. (Nov. 16, 2012) --- Delaware State trailed by one point early in the second half, but could get no closer the rest of the way in a 69-50 loss to St. Francis this evening.

The Lady Hornets fell to 0-2 this season, while the Terriers are 2-0.

Tierra Hawkins recorded a double-double for Delaware State, tallying 17 points and 11 rebounds, each a game high. Hawkins has scored 45 points in DSU's two games this season (22.5 ppg).

Deanna Harmon added nine points and Jade Washington eight for the Lady Hornets.

Jessica Kaufman came off the bench to lead three St. Francis players in double figures with 13 points.

Delaware State trailed 23-20 at the break and pulled to within 23-22 on a lay up by N'Kayah Kersey on the opening possession of the second half.

St. Francis answered with a 10-2 run to open up a 33-24 lead.

After Delaware State cut the Terrier lead to 33-29 on two free throws by Hawkins with 16:00 left, St. Francis responded with another run to open up a double-digit lead.

Collette Hounshell hit a lay-up with 12:43 left to give the Terriers a 44-34 advantage. The Terriers opened up their biggest lead, 67-47, on a lay in by Eilidh Simpson with 1:19 remaining in the game. 

The Lady Hornets got off to a good start in the contest, scoring the first six points of the game. Hawkins gave DSU a 6-0 lead on a follow-up basket with 17:15 left in the first half.

St. Francis closed to within 7-6 before the Lady Hornets pulled away again. Keyanna Tate capped off another 6-0 DSU run with a jumper off a steal by Jade Washington to give the Lady Hornets a 13-6 lead with 10:36 left in the half.

Delaware State led 14-8 before St. Francis began its comeback. The Terriers scored seven straight points, and took their first lead of the game, 15-14, on a jumper by Jaymee Veney with 3:44 left in the opening period.

Hawkins and Kianna D'Oliviera scored baskets on the next two DSU possessions to give the Lady Hornets an 18-15 lead.

The score was 20-20 when SFC's Sarah Benedetti hit a three-pointer with 31 seconds left in the first half to give the Terriers a 23-20 lead at the break.  

The Lady Hornets hit just 15 of 59 shots from the field (25.4%), while St. Francis was 23-of-49 (46.9%). Delaware State outrebounded the Terriers 43-37.

Each team committed 17 turnovers.

Delaware State will wrap up its two-game New York swing with a visit to Fordham on Sunday (Nov. 18). Game time is 2:00 p.m. The Lady Hornets will play their 2012-13 home opener on Wednesday (Nov. 21) against Wilmington University (Del.). Tip-off is 5:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
