NORFOLK, Va. - The Delaware State University volleyball team closed out the 2012 season Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 loss (18-25, 25-23, 16-25, 16-25) to Norfolk State at the Spartans' Joseph Echols Hall.
Senior Laisha Davis (Riviera Beach, Fla.) posted a balanced attack against NSU with nine digs, seven kills and three blocks (one solo). Davis finished with a .267 hitting percentage on the day.
Fellow senior Bel Fakaosi (Salt Lake City, Utah) collected a game-high 33 assists along with a team-high 11 digs. The setter also recorded one ace, one kill and two block assists.
Junior Jessica Croucher (Brisbane, Australia) tallied her sixth double double of the year with a team-high 11 kills and 10 digs.
The Spartans came out strong against the Hornets, winning the first set, 25-18, before Delaware State took the second, 25-23. DSU held the momentum midway through the third before NSU pulled away late, 25-16. The Spartans followed with another 25-16 win in the fourth and final set.
Norfolk State senior Charlotte Armstead led the way with 13 kills on a .500 attack percentage. Fellow seniors Beatriz Ferreira added 10 kills and Nicole Kessner handed out 25 assists.
With the loss, the Hornets finish the season at 5-21 overall and 2-10 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. For the second consecutive season, Delaware State failed to qualify for the MEAC Volleyball Tournament.
The Spartans wrapped up the Northern Division's No. 2 seed in the tournament with a 9-3 record in league play. Norfolk State finished with a 13-19 overall record.
