DOVER, Del. - Delaware State University freshman Tere' Crawford (Dover, Del.) scored her first career goal Sunday afternoon and it proved to be all the Hornets would need as they defeated Howard University, 1-0, at Alumni Stadium on Senior Day.
In the 75th minute, Crawford was in the right place at the right time as a rebounded shot came her way, about five yards out on the left side of the goal. With Bison goalie Kyra Dickinson still recovering from the first shot, Crawford was able to knock the ball into the center of the net to put the Hornets ahead.
Delaware State (3-8-1; 2-1 Great West) outshot Howard (0-15-2; 0-3 GWC) in the contest, 14-4, posting seven shots in each period. The Hornets also held the advantage in corner kicks, 4-1.
Senior Candace Wyre (Smyrna, Del.) and junior Kaitlyn Schech (Abingdon, Md.) led the way with three shots each. Schech was able to get off two shots on goal while Wyre had one.
Also seeing multiple shots was junior Kelly Pelz-Butler (Silver Spring, Md.) and freshman Morgan Durham (Clayton, N.J.), who each had two.
Sophomore Katelyn Koslosky (East Islip, N.Y.) collected two saves in 90:00 minutes of play for Del State, earning her second win of the season. Dickinson tallied five saves in 90:00 minutes for the Bison.
Prior to the contest, Delaware State honored Wyre and her fellow senior classmates Kelsey Gibson (Elizabethtown, N.Y.), Jeanette Salgado (Bergenfield, N.J.) and Theresa Wappett (Queensbury, N.Y.) for their four years of service for the Hornets.
DSU travels west to finish off the season as they play at Houston Baptist at 2 p.m. Saturday and Utah Valley, Monday, Oct. 29 at 9 p.m. The Great West Conference Tournament will be held Nov. 2-5 in Orem, Utah.
