PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The struggles continued Friday evening for the Delaware State University volleyball team as the Hornets fell, 0-3 (23-25, 18-25, 19-25), to MEAC-leading University of Maryland Eastern Shore at UMES' Hytche Athletic Center.
DSU (4-15; 1-6 MEAC) led for the majority of the first set, taking a five-point lead at one point. The Hawks immediately responded with a 10-0 run to go up, 23-18, before winning the set at 25-23. The Hornets outhit UMES for the only time in the match, .118 (7/5/17) to .031 (12/11/32).
UMES (20-4; 6-0 MEAC) jumped out to a quick lead in the second set, but Del State tied things at 11-11 with an ace from senior Laisha Davis (Riviera Beach, Fla.). The Hawks hit their stride afterwards, going on a 13-7 run to close out the game.
The third set went similarly, with the score going back and forth with seven ties, but just two lead changes. With the Hornets up, 13-12, UMES countered with a 7-0 run to go up, 19-13. The Hawks wouldn't look back as they took the 25-19 set and 3-0 match win.
Junior Brooke Redmon (Warrenton, Va.) led Del State with six kills and a .364 attack percentage. Senior Bel Fakaosi (Salt Lake City, Utah) posted 20 assists for the Hornets while sophomore Edarkis Branch (Los Angeles, Calif.) collected seven digs and two aces. Davis added two blocks for DSU.
Saitaua Iosia and Ndidi Ibe paved the way for the Hawks with 17 and 15 kills, respectively. Ibe posted an astounding .500 attack percentage with just three errors. Jessica Vicic tallied a game-high 33 assists.
Delaware State returns to the court for a non-conference matchup at Lehigh on Tuesday.
