HORNETS DOWNED BY NJIT IN GREAT WEST OPENER

NEWARK, N.J. - NJIT was able to get on the board in the second minute of the game and neither team scored afterwards as the Delaware State University women's soccer team was shutout, 1-0, at the Highlanders' Lubetkin Field Thursday evening to open Great West Conference.

At the 1:06 mark, Kylie Jones received the ball about five yards out on the right side of the box from Meryl Hershfield and placed it just to the left of DSU sophomore goalie Katelyn Koslosky (East Islip, N.Y.) to give NJIT (3-10-3; 1-1 GWC) a 1-0 lead.

Koslosky collected four saves in 90 minutes of play for the Hornets (1-8-1; 0-1 GWC).

Delaware State was outshot in the game 6-11, with the Highlanders recording seven shots in the second period.  NJIT also had the advantage in corner kicks at 12-2.

Freshman Danielle Valente (Wallingford, Conn.) and senior Jeanette Salgado (Bergenfield, N.J.) each posted one shot on goal and two shots overall for Del State.

DSU returns home next Thursday (Oct. 18) to host GWC foe South Carolina State at 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium to kick off Homecoming weekend.  Live stats will be available through DSUHornets.com.
