GREENSBORO, N.C. - Sophomore Tasia Bristow (Baltimore, Md.) recorded the first double double of her career with 11 points and 10 rebounds and redshirt freshman Tierra Hawkins (Clinton, Md.) collected 15 points and nine rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Delaware State University women's basketball team was outscored, 9-3, in the final two minutes en route to a 49-57 loss at North Carolina A&T Monday evening.
Bristow bested a previous career-high of six rebounds, set Saturday at North Carolina Central.Â
The Lady Hornets led at halftime, 30-28, and with 10 minutes remaining in the game, but couldn't keep up with the Lady Aggies in the waning minutes of the contest.
In the final five minutes, NCAT made eight free throws, including four from Amber Calvin, compared to just two for Del State. Additionally, the Lady Aggies converted 12 points off of DSU turnovers in the second half while the Lady Hornets made just four.
DSU started the game with a 10-6 lead heading into the first media timeout, including three-pointers from Bristow and fellow sophomore Deanna Harmon (Owings Mills, Md.).
A trey from sophomore Tarshaye' White (Suitland, Md.) at 12:37 gave the Lady Hornets a one-point advantage at 13-12.
Sparked by a layup from Tiffanie Adair at 7:34, the Lady Aggies went on a 7-0 run to go up, 27-19.
Del State responded with their own run, finishing out the first half on an 11-1 drive to go up, 30-28. The run included five points from Hawkins and 3-pointers from Bristow and White.
NCAT came out of halftime energized, immediately scoring five points and going up, 33-30. Consecutive baskets from freshman Keyanna Tate (Beltsville, Md.) and a Bristow trey put DSU up by three at 36-33.
The Lady Aggies tied things at 36-36 and took the lead at 41-39 before the Lady Hornets tied the game at 41-41 with a layup from redshirt sophomore Uchechi Ahaiwe (Riverdale, Md.) at 10:58.
Less than a minute later, Bristow put in a layup to give Del State a 43-41 lead. The two-point advantage ended up being DSU's final lead of the game.
Over the next four-plus minutes, NCAT went on a 7-1 run to go up, 48-44 with 3:08 remaining in the game.
A Hawkins layup cut things to two at 48-46, but the Lady Aggies would go up by as much as seven and eventually win by eight at 57-49.
NCAT's Tiffanie Adair led all scorers with 19 points and also had a double double with 10 rebounds. Adriana Nazario recorded 11 points for the Lady Aggies.
With the loss, the Lady Hornets fall to 4-16 on the season and 1-6 in the MEAC while NCAT improves to 9-12 overall and 4-4.
Delaware State returns home next weekend as they host Norfolk State at 5 p.m. on Saturday and Hampton next Monday at 5:30 p.m.
