HORNETS TO FACE FLORIDA A&M IN MEAC TOURNEY OPENER

OLIVER LEADS HORNETS PAST RATTLERS

Dover, Del. (Jan. 23, 2012) --- Junior Marques Oliver was two blocks shy of achieving a triple-double to help lead Delaware State to a 65-51 win over Florida A&M in Memorial Hall this evening. Oliver had 10 points, 12 rebounds and a school record-tying eight blocks in the contest.  

The Hornets snapped an eight-game losing streak to improve to 5-11 overall and 2-3 in the MEAC. DSU won for the first time since a 78-68 victory at Maryland-Eastern Shore on Dec. 3, 2011.

The loss snapped a two-game win streak for the Rattlers, who fell to 5-16 and 3-4.

Oliver shares the Hornets' single game record for blocks with Aaron Fleetwood, who swatted away eight shots against Northwestern in 2004. Oliver has 16 blocks in the last three games, and 35 for the season. He has a team-high three double-doubles this season

Delaware State had 13 blocks in the contest, two shy of the school 15 set on Dec. 26, 2011 at Wagner.

Delaware State's Tahj Tate led all players with 19 points (8-16 FGs). Jay Threatt had 11 points, a season-high nine assists and three steals for the Hornets.

Nathaniel Drayton came off the bench to lead Florida A&M with 12 points.

Delaware State led 27-23 at the break, and opened up a 37-25 lead on a three-pointer by Casey Walker (14 points) with 14:37 left to play. .The Hornets opened up their biggest lead of the game, 65-46, on a jumper by Tate with 1:36 remaining.

Delaware State hit 25 of its 54 shots from the field (46.3%), including 7-of-17 from three-point territory (41.2%). Florida A&M was 18-of-55 from the floor (32.7%), including 5-of-15 from beyond the arc.

The Rattlers were also hurt by 19 turnovers.  

Delaware State returns to action on Saturday at North Carolina Central. Game time is 4:00 p.m. in Durham, N.C.
