THE GAME
Delaware State renews its rivalry with Shaw University in the 2011 home opener. The Hornets kicked off the new season with a 24-21 victory at VMI last Saturday in the debut of head coach Kermit Blount. Quarterback Nick Elko threw for 232 yards and three touchdowns and Justin Wilson had six catches for 110 yards and two scores to lead the DSU offense. The Hornet defense forced three turnovers and recorded a key fourth down stop on VMI's final drive of the game. The victory snapped a two-game Delaware State losing streak in season openers, while VMI had won its previous six opening games. Division II Shaw, the defending Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) champ, is 0-1 after a 16-13 loss to Stillman in its opener last weekend. The Bears were held to -5 yards rushing and 171 total yards in the game.
THE SERIES
The Hornets and Bears are meeting for the first time since 1976, and the third time overall. Delaware State won the two previous meetings. The teams first met in 1975 at Shaw, with the Hornets coming out on top 14-6. Shaw visited Delaware State the following year. The Hornets posted a 27-6 win in that contest.
