BALTIMORE, Md. - Freshman Theresa Schieder (Munich, Germany) recorded
a team-high 10 kills Sunday afternoon as the Delaware State volleyball team
fell, 3-1 (19-25, 15-25, 25-22, 24-26), to Morgan State at Hill Field House.
Senior
Megan McDonald (Spring, Texas) added
in seven kills and a .700 attack percentage in the loss while junior Bel Fakaosi (Salt Lake City, Utah)
contributed 28 assists and 10 digs.
In
set one, the Lady Bears compiled a match-high .464 attack percentage (17
kills/four errors/28 total attack) compared to .250 for DSU (11/four/28). They started the game with an 11-4 lead over
the Hornets. Morgan State held a steady
lead before Del State pulled within four at 22-18 with a kill from McDonald. The Lady Bears responded with kills from
Kierra Outlin and Ashley Johnson to go up 24-18 before closing out with a 25-19
win.
Set
two produced a similar result as the Hornets recorded eight errors for a -.038
hitting percentage. Morgan State jumped
out to a 13-5 lead and the closes Del State would get would be seven points for
the remainder of the set. A kill from sophomore
Jessica Croucher (Brisbane,
Australia) pulled DSU to 23-15 before losing, 25-15.
The
Hornets rallied in the third set to take the 25-22 victory and force a fourth
set. Down, 18-19, a kill from Schieder
tied things at 19-19. Two attack errors
from Outlin and an ace from sophomore Sonya
Inderbitzin (Annandale, Va.) gave Del State a 22-20 lead to force a Morgan
State timeout. The Lady Bears would pull
within one at 23-22 with a kill from Ashley Johnson. Coming out of a DSU timeout, kills from
Schieder and junior Laisha Davis
(Riviera Beach, Fla.) gave the Hornets the win.
Things
stayed close in the fourth set as the two teams battled things out. The set was tied 17 times and the lead
changed hands five times. Del State held
a 24-23 lead with a kill from McDonald before the Lady Bears wrapped up the game
on a 3-0 run for the 26-24 set and match victory.
Morgan
State received double digit kills from four players in Outlin (16), Erin Cox
(14), Janelle Wilson (10) and Johnson (10).
The
loss puts the Hornets at 4-19 overall and 3-7 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference while MSU improves to 9-18 and 7-4.
Del
State returns home next weekend as they host Hampton (Friday) and Norfolk State
(Sunday) for Parent's Weekend and Senior Day (Sunday).
