MEAC RECOGNIZES FOUR DSU ALL-ACADEMIC HONOREES

NORFOLK, Va. - The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference announced the 2011 Volleyball All-Academic selections, honoring four Delaware State University student-athletes and 56 student-athletes over 13 conference institutions who achieved academic success during the 2010-11 academic school year, Wednesday afternoon.

Seniors Sonja Banicevic (Zagreb, Croatia) and Elisa Herrmann (Andernach, Germany) and sophomores Jessica Croucher (Brisbane, Australia) and Sonya Inderbitzin (Annandale, Va.) represented the Hornets on the conference list.

Croucher and Inderbitzin both currently hold a cumulative 4.00 grade point average.

Croucher is majoring in Physical Education and was named to the DSU President's List her freshman year with a perfect 4.0 GPA.  Upon graduation from Del State, the sophomore plans to teach high school physical education in her homeland of Australia.

Inderbitzin, a Biology (health professions concentration) major, was also named to the President's List her freshman year in addition to being inducted into the 2011 Honors Program.  She is the Vice President of the DSU Health Professions Student Organization and plans to be a Pediatric Oncologist upon graduation.

Banicevic has been a member of the Del State Dean's List each year of enrollment and was named to the DSU President's List once.  The Finance and Banking major was also awarded as the "Best Junior Finance Student" by Financial Executives International last season in addition to being selected into the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society.

Herrmann, a Hospitality and Tourism Management student, was named a College of Business Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management Departmental Scholar in 2011.  She is also a member of the International Honor Society, Beta Gamma Sigma and Chi Alpha Sigma in addition to being a member of the DSU President's List since 2009.  Upon graduation in May, Herrmann plans to work in hotel/resort management and become an event planner.

"This is a great honor for our team and these individuals to earn this award," remarked DSU head coach Renee Arnold.  "Our ladies work very hard off the court with their academics and they deserve these honors.  [Associate Athletic Director for Student Services] Eric Hart and his staff also need to be recognized for the long hours and hard work they put in throughout the year to make sure these student-athletes succeed in the classroom."

MEAC sophomore, junior and senior student-athletes with a 3.0 or better GPA as well as transfer student-athletes who have been in residence at the institutions for at least one year are eligible for All-Academic accolades.

"I commend our volleyball student-athletes who have maintained a 3.0 or better grade point average during the 2010-11 academic school year," said Commissioner Dennis E. Thomas. "I would further like to congratulate the coaches, academic support staff and parents of these academic achievers for their contributions to the student-athletes' success."

For the 2011 spring semester, the Hornet volleyball team earned the highest GPA of any sport on campus with a team cumulative GPA of 3.44.  Additionally, four players earned a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester.
