PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Delaware State
University volleyball team had their hands full Tuesday evening when they
traveled to the William P. Hytche Athletic Center to take on the University of
Maryland Eastern Shore. The Hawks
outscored the Hornets, 75-33, on the night to take the 3-0 (25-14, 25-6, 25-13)
victory in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.
DSU
recorded their highest attack percentage of the match in the first set of play
at .030 with six kills, five errors and 33 total attacks. UMES took a quick lead, 6-1, before Del State
would rally back and come within two at 9-7, with kills from junior Laisha Davis (Riviera Beach, Fla.) and
freshman Edarkis Branch (Los
Angeles, Calif.). The Hawks ended the
set on a 5-0 run, including three straight kills from Maline Vaitai, Kaveinga
Lea'Aetoa and Ndidi Ibe, to win, 25-14.
UMES
dominated the second set, jumping out to a 10-2 lead. Branch collected a kill to bring the Hornets
within14-6, but the Hawks would end the set on an 11-0 run to take the win.
The
third set didn't fare much better for Del State as they posted a -.130 attack
percentage (two kills, five errors, 23 total attacks) in the 25-13 loss.
Senior Sonja Banicevic (Zagreb, Croatia) led
the Hornets (2-12; 1-1 MEAC) with 10 digs while junior Bel Fakaosi (Salt Lake City, Utah) recorded a team-high eight
assists. Branch led the team with four
kills.
Saitaua
Iosia recorded 13 of the Hawks' 42 kills on the night and Becky Prado collected
21 digs. Jessica Vicic posted a
game-high 31 assists. The win puts UMES
at 1-0 in conference play and 10-6 overall.
The
Hornets return home to host Morgan State at 7 p.m. on Friday.
