HORNETS FALL TO UMBC IN SOCCER OPENER

Baltimore, Md. (Aug. 20, 2010) --- Four players scored first period goals to lead Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) to a 4-1 win over Delaware State in the women's soccer opener for each team at the UMBC Soccer Stadium Friday evening.

The Retrievers scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the contest. UMBC's Sandra Vacarino found the net off an assist by Kelsi Morris for the game's first goal in the 6th minute. The Retrievers opened up a 2-0 lead when Vicarino assisted on a goal by LeAnne Edgar in the 10th minute of the match.

The Hornets fell behind 3-0 when UMBC's Christine Sadowski fired a shot past DSU goal keeper Courteney Haas off a free kick in the 35th minute. The Retrievers capped off their scoring on a shot by Shannon McGuiness off a corner kick less than minute later.

Delaware State avoided the shutout when Randall Marshall scored her first career goal following a corner kick by Theresa Wappett in the 58th minute.

UMBC outshot the Hornets 14-3 in the contest. The Retrievers had seven shots on goals, compared to three for DSU.

Haas was credited with four saves before being relieved in goal by Brittany Curtis in the 72nd minute for Delaware State.

The Hornets will play their 2010 home opener this Sunday against the University of Delaware. The match gets underway at 2:00 p.m. at Alumni Stadium on the DSU campus.
