Dover (Feb. 11, 2009) --- Former Delaware State University football standout Bryant “Gene” Lake has been selected for induction into the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Hall of Fame.

Lake, and four others, will be enshrined during the 2009 MEAC Hall of Fame induction ceremonies on Thursday, March 12 at the M.C. Benton, Jr. Convention Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. The annual event is held in conjunction with the MEAC Basketball Tournament March 9-14 in Winston-Salem.

A 1984 Kodak Division I-AA and Sheridan Black College All-American, Lake led all college players with a school-record 1,722 rushing yards that season. In addition, he holds Hornet records for rushing yards in a game (336), rushing touchdowns in a season (20) and career rushing TDs (35). A native of Milford, Del., Lake was also named MEAC Offensive Player-of-the-Year and State Athlete-of-the-Year by the Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association for the 1984 season.

Lake is third all-time at Delaware State and ninth in MEAC history with 3,123 career rushing yards.

He was inducted into the Delaware State University Athletics Hall-of-Fame in 2001.

The 2009 MEAC Hall-of-Fame class also includes former Norfolk State track & field star Chris Brown, administrators William Hamilton of South Carolina State and Joe McIver of Morgan State, along with veteran broadcaster Charlie Neal.

“We are pleased to acknowledge the accomplishments and contributions that the 2009 MEAC Hall of Fame inductees have added to their institutions and our conference's rich legacy,” said Dennis E. Thomas, MEAC Commissioner. “This is a tremendous class of individuals who have had success not only during their tenure at MEAC institutions but also as leaders in their professions and communities.”
