Norfolk, Va. (Feb. 8, 2010) --- Alexis Abraham and Selena Galloway scored 11 points each, and Cortney Crockett added 10 to lead Delaware State to a 57-44 MEAC women's basketball win over Norfolk State at Echols Hall Monday.
The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Lady Hornets, who improved to 4-19 overall and 2-8 in the MEAC. The victory was also the first on the road for DSU this season (1-13). Norfolk State dropped its fifth in a row to fall to 3-17 and 0-10. The Spartans have also lost nine straight in the series.
Abraham came off the bench to hit 4-of-9 shots from the floor, including 3-for-7 from three-point territory. She leads the Lady Hornets with 22 threes this season. Brittany Washington pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for DSU, her sixth game with 10-or-more boards this season. Freshman Kianna D'Oliveira, a Norfolk-area product, had six rebounds and three blocks for the Lady Hornets.
Delaware State trailed by five in the early going, but rallied to take a 25-24 lead at the half.
Norfolk State scored the first five points of the second half, and opened up a 29-25 lead on a three-pointer by Recca Trice with 18:32 left to play.
The Hornets answered with a 10-0 run, and opened up a 35-29 lead on a three-point shot by Jamarra Robinson with 13:44 remaining.
Crockett capped off a 10-2 DSU run with a lay up to give the Lady Hornets a 49-39 lead with 5:50 left in the game.
Norfolk State pulled to within 49-44 on a basket with 2:46 left, but Delaware State scored the last eight points of the game to secure the win.
The Lady Hornets return to action this Saturday at home against Bethune-Cookman. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
