Dover, Del. (Feb. 13, 2010) --- Cortney Crockett scored a game-high 16 points, and Brittany Washington had 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead Delaware State to a 57-53 women's basketball win over Bethune-Cookman in Memorial Hall this afternoon.
The Lady Hornets won their second straight to improve to 5-19 overall and 3-8 in the MEAC. The loss snapped a five-game win streak for the Wildcats, who fell 12-11 and 7-4.
Crockett was 8-for-12 from the field. She also tied for game-high honors with five steals. Washington recorded her fifth "double-double" of the season.
Euneshia Proctor was high scorer for Bethune-Cookman with 15 points. Sarah Bolden led the Wildcats with a game-high 13 rebounds.
The first half featured six ties and five lead changes, and ended with Delaware State holding a 30-24 lead.
The Lady Hornets opened up their biggest lead, 36-26, on a Crockett jumper with 15:58 left to play.
Bethune-Cookman scored the next 10 points, and tied the score at 36 on a jumper by Isaac with 11:03 remaining.
After Delaware State regained the lead 37-36 on a free throw by Sade Bowen, Bethune-Cookman scored the next four points to open up a 40-37 lead.
The Wildcats forced the tenth tie of the game, 49-49, on a lay up by Proctor with 3:22 left in the game.
The teams traded baskets over the next two minutes before Washington put the Hornets ahead for good, 54-53, on a short jumper with 1:23 left. After a missed shot by BCU, Alexis Abraham hit two free throws to give Delaware State a 56-53 lead with 31 ticks on the clock.
Bethune-Cookman missed a shot on its next possession, and Delaware State's Alex Stewart scored the game's final point on a free throw with 12 seconds to go.
The Hornets return to action Monday evening at home against Florida A&M. Game time is 5:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall. Bethune-Cookman wraps up a four-game road swing with a visit to Maryland-Eastern Shore Monday evening.
