DSU Honors its 2010 Athletics Hall of Fame Inductees

DSU recently welcomed 13 new members to its Athletics Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the Dover Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center.

The newest hall of fame members are:

  • Thomas Arrington - a multiple sports star at DSC in basketball, baseball, cross country, as well as track and field from 1959-1961, Mr. Arrington is especially member for being a starter on the Hornet basketball team that was invited to two post-season CIAA tournaments. He later played baseball in the Pittsburgh Pirates minor league system.
  • DeCasto Brown - A 1978 First Team All-MEAC football selection, he led the MEAC in receptions that year and was the first ever Del State player to be selected to play in the Black College All-Star Game. He is currently the fifth leading receiver in DSU history and the seventh leading receiver in total yards.
  • PattyBrown - Arguably the top all-around player in the history of the DSU softball program, by the time Ms. Brown graduated in 2003, she was atop nearly every major DSU offensive category. She still ranks as the Hornets' all-time leader in runs scored and triples.
  • Steven Coleman - After earning All-MEAC recognition as a Hornet football defensive lineman star in the early 1970s, Mr. Coleman went to compete in the NFL in stints with the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Oilers and Denver Broncos.
  • Bill Collick - During his 12 years as the Hornets' head football coach from 1985-1996, Collick guided the DSU football program through the most celebrated period in the team's history. During his tenure, the Hornets posted an overall record of 81-48 and captured five MEAC championships.
  • Gwendolyn Harris - Despite there being no varsity sport for women when Ms. Harris attended DSC in the early 1970s, she lettered all-four years in basketball, softball, field hockey, as well as track and field. Following her 1974 graduation, she became a winning coach at Caesar Rodney High School in Camden, Del., and currently is in her ninth years as the head women's track coach at the University of Pennsylvania.
  • Victor Heflin - A standout defensive back for the Hornets, Mr. Heflin led the Hornets in interceptions in 1982, his final DSC season. He was selected in the sixth round of the National Football league draft by the Denver Broncos and went out to play two years for the St. Louis Cardinals.
  • Joe Lane - As one of the top defensive linemen in DSU football history, Mr. Lane earned Second Team All-MEAC honors as a sophomore, and then First Team All-MEAC honors in 1983 and 1984. He was named DSC's Male Athlete of the Year in 1984-85.
  • Ean Rose- A prolific shot put and discus star in track and field, Mr. Rose captured MEAC championships in the indoor shot put in 1999 and outdoor shot put in 2000, as well as the indoor and outdoor discus in 2000. He is the DSU record holder in those categories. He was honored as the DSU Male Athlete of the Year in 2000.
  • Janice Savage - In two years as a Hornet softball pitcher, Ms. Savage ranked in the top 25 in the nation in 2004 in strikeouts per seven innings and earned run average. She still hold the DSU season and career records strikeouts, as was a First Team All-MEAC selection who in two years posted an astounding 17-1 MEAC record on the mound.
  • Sam Shepherd - A Hornet basketball star from 1971-1975, Mr. Shepherd was an All-MEAC selection who currently ranks 14th on DSU's all-time scoring list. After his Hornet playing days, he played professional basketball in Venezuela and Columbia.
  • David Wharton - A four-year basketball starter in the mid-1960s, Mr. Wharton was a consistent leading scorer and served as the team's captain his junior and senior years.
  • Donald Wright - As a student, Mr. Wright developed a conditioning and well-being through aquatic program at DSC that served both the Hornet basketball and football teams. He later became the first African American McDonald's Restaurant franchisee in New England, where he has received numerous business and community service accolades. He has never forgotten DSU and continues to use his resources to support the Hornet's basketball and football teams.

The Hall of Fame Class of 2010 was also recognized at halftime of the Hornets' Oct. 30 football contest against South Carolina State at Alumni Stadium.
