JOYNER?S 1000th KILL GIVES HORNETS THE VICTORY

DOVER, DE. (September 11th, 2009) -With an emphatic swing on the last point of the night, Cassandra Joyner not only gave the Delaware State Hornets a win, she also etched her name in the history books.  Her final attack was the 1000th kill of her career, making her the first Hornet to ever reach the milestone, as DSU defeated Norfolk State 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-15).

It was the first night of DSU Volleyball's Parent's Weekend, and the middle hitter everyone knows as "CJ" gave her parents Delmar and Janet a memory to treasure while they looked on from the stands.  The Claymont, DE native was spectacular in the Hornets home opener, with 13 kills against just one error on 18 total attacks for a gaudy .667 hitting percentage to lead all players.  The Hornets as a unit hit .366, shattering their best performance of the season during their opening match of the Hornet Invitational.

"This was such a great night, and I can't say enough about my teammates and parents and what they mean to me," said Joyner, whose teammates erupted when they found out her last kill broke the four-figure barrier.  "We're really playing well right now, and I just hope we can continue to build and get better throughout the season."

Norfolk State (2-7) was led by Chynna Blaker, who notched 12 kills for the Spartans, who dropped their match to La Salle earlier in the day.  Though both teams are members of the MEAC, this was not a conference contest.

The Hornets next take to the court tomorrow at 1pm against Navy, and then at 5pm against La Salle.  For more information on the Hornet Invitational and Hornet Volleyball, log onto DSUHornets.com.
