HORNETS FALL TO BRONCS IN OPENER

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. (September 1, 2009) - Two goals from senior substitute Lauren Musumeci were the difference as the Rider Broncs defeated the Delaware State Hornets 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon at the Rider Athletic Fields.

"I was happy to see a lot of new players getting to see the field today," said head coach Nitan Soni, who starts his second year in charge of DSU Soccer.  "We gave them a lot of exposure to what college soccer is like, and considering the maturity and experience of the other side, I thought they did a really good job.  This was an opportunity to learn and develop, and a really good first game to get under their belt, so now they know what to expect at this level."

Rider (1-2) outshot the Hornets 23-5, and forced keeper Brittany Curtis to make 10 saves to keep the Hornets in the match.  Delaware State (0-1) also used its experienced back line to keep some of the Bronc aggression at bay, forcing Rider offsides eight times to just once for the Hornets.

Musumeci's first strike came just before the halftime whistle, as she found the Hornet net with a well placed header off a cross from Claire Thompson off the wing.  Her second tally was more controversial, as a Rider player appeared to kick DSU keeper Brittany Curtis in the face, forcing her to drop the ball she possessed.  But match official Ismail Asadov saw no foul, and the easy sitter was quickly put away just five yards from Curtis' line.

The Hornets will look to notch their first result of 2009 on Friday as they take on the Lafayette Leopards on Friday at 4 p.m. in Easton, P.A.  Check back with DSUHornets.com for all the information you need on Hornet Soccer throughout the 2009 season.
