HORNETS FALL IN MEAC OPENER

Princess Anne, Md. (Dec. 5, 2009) --- Maryland-Eastern Shore ended more than five years of men's basketball frustration against Delaware State at the Hytche Center this afternoon. The Hawks held off a late DSU rally to defeat the Hornets 53-50 in the 2009-10 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener for each team. The Hornets had the final possession, but Marcus Neal missed an off-balanced three-point attempt as time expired. The victory snapped a 10-game UMES losing streak to Delaware State, dating back to the 2003-04 season. Delaware State also lost at the Hychte Center for the first time since Jan. 6, 2001, a string of five games. UMES has won its last two games to improve to 2-5 overall and 1-0 in the MEAC. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Hornets, who fell to 4-2 overall. Hillary Haley led UMES with a game-high 14 points, while Kevin White added 12. Frisco Sandidge was the only Delaware State player in double-figures with 10 points. The Hornets led 23-16 at the half, but UMES rallied to take a 10-point lead with eight minutes left to play.  Delaware State will return to action on Monday at Arkansas.
