BALTIMORE, November 21, 2009- The defending MEAC champion Florida A&M Lady Rattlers advanced to their 11th straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Championship final with a 3-1 win over Delaware State in the semifinal round of the Coppin Center on the campus of Coppin State University.
To The Lady Rattlers jumped out early lead with a 25-11 win the first set. Delaware State got their momentum going in the second set and traded points with FAMU before falling 25-22. The Lady Rattlers rallied back and won a hard fought third set 25-20 and topped off the victory with a 25-14 win in the fourth and deciding set.
Jovana Blazeksi, the 2009 MEAC Player of the Year, led the charge with 21 kills and 14 digs. Susan Egoavil tallied 21 digs in the victory.
Cassandra Joyner recorded 12 kills and six digs in the loss, while Sarah Wheatcroft added 14 digs.
The Lady Rattlers will face Maryland Eastern Shore in tomorrow's championship final. FAMU has played UMES in the last two MEAC championships (2007 and 2008) and leads the series 2-0.
The volleyball championship tournament will conclude on Sunday beginning at noon. The championship finale will be televised on ESPNU in a tape-delayed broadcast, on the same day, beginning at 10 p.m.
