PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (Oct. 30th) - Despite 10 kills and a .471 hitting percentage for junior rightside
Sarah Wheatcroft, Delaware State Volleyball was unable to put together a winning set and fell 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-20) to the UMES Hawks on Friday night at the W.P. Hytche Center on the campus of UMES.
The ability to receive serve was the difference, as 12 aces for the Hawks against two for DSU would be a large part of the difference. UMES (18-6, 7-0 MEAC) was also more efficient on their home floor, hitting .264 to .156 for the Hornets. UMES was lead by the tandem of Christine Edwards and Caylin Woodward, who picked up 12 and 10 kills respectively for the Hawks. Woodward also notched 10 digs and 10 assists for a triple-double.
Wheatcroft was a bright spot for DSU, and sophomore setter Martina Ferrari picked up all 29 Hornet assists as well as 10 digs for a double-double, and the Hornets used their height advantage at the net to outblock the Hawks 6.0 to 4.5. Ashley Herman also picked up her 56th ace of the campaign, as she continues to lead all of NCAA Division I in the category, finishing the match with a 0.66 aces per set average.
The Hornets (15-12, 5-2 MEAC) are back to Memorial Gym on Sunday at 3 p.m. when they take on Howard. Live stats for the match will be available via DSUHornets.com.
