HORNET VOLLEYBALL IMPRESSIVE IN SWEEP OF COPPIN STATE

BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 23rd) - Delaware State Volleyball was a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-11) winner over Coppin State (1-24, 0-5 MEAC) on Friday night at the Coppin Center in Baltimore.  The Hornets posted one of their most statistically impressive victories of 2009 to give head coach Renee Arnold her 80th win at the helm of the Hornets.

Reigning MEAC Player of the Week Cassandra Joyner made an excellent push to retain her title for another week, hitting .632 with 12 kills on 19 errorless attacks, also scoring on all five Hornet total blocks, as well as registering six digs.  The MEAC's leader in aces per set, junior Ashley Herman, had seven serves unreturned by the Eagles which will help keep her in the top 10 nationally in the category.

The Hornet defense is first overall in the MEAC as well, and once again tonight they blocked and passed with their signature authority.  Holding the Eagles to a .000 hitting percentage, DSU also registered five total team blocks and dug 44 balls in just three sets.  Setter Martina Ferrari led the Hornets with 12 controlled attacks, and added 31 assists for the only double-double by any player for either team.

"CJ played really well," said head coach Renee Arnold, who is 4-1 in MEAC play for the first time in her six year tenure.  "I also thought Elisa (Hermann) and Ashley (Herman) did some good things as well."  Assistant coach Kris McGlothin added "for a team that sometimes has a hard time focusing, we really stepped up and executed the way we need to tonight."

DSU gets back on the hardwood on Sunday at 3pm when they visit Hampton.  The Hornets were 3-1 victors in the first match between the sides on Oct. 9th in Dover.
