Norfolk, Va. (Jan. 17, 2009) ?- Sonia Johnson led three Delaware State players in double figures with 20 points in the Lady Hornets' 70-64 win over Norfolk State at Echols Hall Saturday.DSU won its fourth in a row to improve to 7-9 overall and 3-0 in the MEAC. The Spartans are winless in 13 games this season, including four in league play.Johnson, a Norfolk-area native, was 7-for-11 from the field, including a three-pointer (1-for-3). She has reached 20 or more points in two of the last three games. The Lady Hornets are 5-2 since she was inserted into the starting line-up.  Keyhana Wakefield had 15 points, while Jameka Smith added 10 for the Lady Hornets. Wakefield also tied for game-high honors with eight rebounds, and led all players with five assists.  Marquilla Evans led three Norfolk State players in double figures with 18 points. Ebony Gibbs had 16 points and Danelle Tate 10 for the Spartans. The game featured 12 lead changes and 11 ties.  The final tie occurred when Norfolk State's Evans nailed a three-pointer to even the score at 58 with 4:22 left to play. Delaware State answered with consecutive baskets by Candice Stewart and
Brittany Washington to open up a 62-58 lead. The Lady Hornets led 66-61 after a jumper by Thea Littlepage with 59 seconds remaining. Wakefield and Johnson each hit two free throws in the final 42 seconds to seal DSU's eighth straight win against the Spartans.  In the first half, Norfolk State led 19-13 after a lay-up by Evans. Delaware State answered with a 9-2 run, and opened up a 22-21 lead on a lay-in by Wakefield with 8:42 left in the half.  The Lady Hornets led 34-31 at the break.  Delaware State will wrap-up a two-game road swing with a visit MEAC preseason favorite North Carolina A&T on Monday.
