HAMPTON, Va. (August 30, 2008) ? After a rough first day which saw the Hornets lose both their matches, DSU rebounded the second day to defeat Wofford and South Carolina State to even its record at 2-2.
The first day saw the Hornets fall to Farleigh Dickinson 3-0 (22-25, 18-25, 19-25) and South Dakota 3-1 (15-25, 17,25, 18-25, 25-22). In the South Dakota match, Sarah Wheatcroft and Erica Tajchman each registered a team-high 10 kills. Wheatcroft also led the Hornets with 16 assists.
“It looked like our first games of the season,” Head Coach Renee Arnold Said. “By the second match, we started building off some of the good things the girls were doing.”
Building off momentum is exactly what the Hornets did in day two of the tournament, defeating Wofford 3-2 (25-20, 13-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-10), and South Carolina State 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-16) respectively.
In the Wofford contest, Cassandra Joyner led the team with 20 kills. Setters Sarah Wheatcroft and Martina Ferrari combined for 42 assists and Ashley Herman led the way on the defensive end racking up 26 digs, a new career high.
In the match against South Carolina State, Joyner led the way offensively with 13 kills. Wheatcroft and Ferrari led the team in assists once again with 16 and 11 respectively.
The Hornets will travel to Easton, Pa. to compete in the Lafayette Tournament on September 5-6.
