COLD SHOOTING LADY HORNETS FALL TO ST. PETER?S

LADY HORNETS NO MATCH FOR MICHIGAN STATE

East Lansing, Mich. (Dec. 18, 2008) --- Allyssa DeHaan and Aisha Jefferson scored 15 points each to lead Michigan State to a 71-41 women's basketball win over Delaware State at the Breslin Center Thursday evening. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Spartans, who improved to 7-4 on the season. The Lady Hornets have dropped seven of their last eight games to fall to 2-7.

 

DeHaan, a six-foot-nine-inch junior, was 6-for-9 from the field. She also blocked six shots, giving her 15 in the last two games. Jefferson was 4-for-5 from the floor and 7-of-8 at the free throw line. Courtney Schiffauer came off the bench to tally 11 for Michigan State.

 

Freshman Sonia Johnson was the only Delaware State player in double figures with 11 points. Johnson was 4-for-8 (one three-pointer) from the floor and 2-for-2 at the line. Jameka Smith, Alexis Abraham and Ashley Thompson added five points each for the Lady Hornets.

 

Michigan State used a major first-half run to take control of the game. The Spartans led 6-5 before scoring 21 straight points over a 10-minute stretch. DeHaan capped off the run with a free throw to give MSU a 27-5 lead with 5:05 left in the first half. She had nine points during the rally.

 

Delaware State was 0-for-11 from the field and committed six turnovers during the Michigan State run.

 

The Spartans led 32-12 at the half.

 

The Lady Hornets hit just four-of-19 first-half shots (21.1%).

 

Michigan State led 40-10 before running off the next 10 points. The Spartans opened up a 50-18 lead on a lay up by Schiffauer with 12:25 left to play.

 

The Spartans won the second half 39-29. Michigan State also held a big advantage on the boards, outrebounding the Lady Hornets 44-21. 

 

Delaware State will travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia State in its next contest this Sunday (Dec. 21). Game time is 1:00 p.m.
